High-Temperature / Retort Processing
Hot-fill, pasteurization and retort processes subject labels to heat and moisture that off-the-shelf constructions cannot survive.
The Challenge
Heat-processed foods and beverages are filled or sterilized hot: hot-fill jars, pasteurized dairy, and retorted cans, pouches and trays. The label must survive the process intact — no peeling, no wrinkling, no ink migration — and still look right on the shelf afterwards.
This is a service-and-material problem, not just an adhesive problem: heat attacks the adhesive, the facestock and the inks together.
Why Labels Fail
Heat softens adhesives. Above a formulation’s service ceiling, the bond relaxes, the label shifts or the adhesive can squeeze out at edges and pick up contamination.
Inks and coatings have their own heat limits — under moist heat, poorly cured inks can soften and migrate or print can scuff after processing.
Facestocks shrink or wrinkle differently from the container during heating and cooling, and steam can work its way under a label edge and lift it.
Material Solution
We work with heat-rated adhesive systems (acrylic and hot-melt families engineered for elevated service) and temperature-rated facestocks, matched to whether your process is wet or dry heat and to your time–temperature profile.
Ink and coating systems are selected for the same envelope — thermal-transfer or UV-cured chemistries that stay stable through processing. Final selection is confirmed against your actual process curve — discuss with our engineers.
Process Control
Because every retort line has its own profile, we run trial constructions against your process parameters rather than a generic cook. Coating weight, laminate build and print cure are fixed on the trial so the production construction matches what you validated.
How We Verify
Verification is a simulation: we produce trial labels, process them through a heat/moisture cycle that mirrors your line (parameters agreed with your team), then check adhesion, edge condition, appearance and print integrity.
For retort work the cycle curve is the specification — we document results per trial and keep the validated construction on file for repeat orders.
