Field-tested resources for label engineers and buyers
Fault diagnosis, compliance self-checks and serialization guidance — written from converting-line experience, kept deliberately vendor-neutral. Download each guide with your work email, no sales call required.
1 · Label Failure Troubleshooting
The nine failure patterns we see most often on filling lines — and the first thing to check for each.
| Symptom | First suspect | Typical fix direction |
|---|---|---|
| Edges lift on curved bottles | Facestock spring-back exceeds adhesive holding power | Thinner, more flexible facestock + higher-holding acrylic adhesive |
| Corners lift, straight edges fine | Corner stress concentration; die-cut damaged the adhesive | Rounded corners ≥1.5 mm; verify die-cut edge per batch |
| Wrinkling / arching after labelling | Temperature mismatch or condensation on the container | Warm cold containers to within 5 °C; low-shrink facestock |
| Bubbles right at labelling | Labeller settings — not the material | Roller alignment, static control, slower apply speed; hand-apply to confirm |
| Bubbles after retort / hot fill | Steam penetrating a low-barrier facestock | PET/BOPP barrier facestock + wet-heat-rated adhesive |
| Peels off soft plastic after weeks | Plasticiser migration softening the adhesive | Plasticiser-resistant adhesive system |
| Adhesive residue on removal | Permanent adhesive in a remove / wash scenario | Wash-off (alkaline) or removable adhesive matched to end-of-life |
| Print fades or smears | Ink not matched to facestock or UV exposure | Pigment inks + film/UV protection; chemical-resistant inks near solvents |
| Scanner can't read the code | Code print quality below grade C | ISO/IEC 15415/15416 design rules; grade ≥ C in production |

2 · Material Selection Quick Reference
Match the construction to the working condition, not the other way around.
| Working condition | Typical construction direction | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|
| Curved / small-diameter container | Thin flexible film facestock (PE, soft synthetic) + high-holding adhesive | Avoid stiff paper; keep label length off the main curvature |
| Freezer / cold chain | Freezer-rated adhesive (rated well below your lowest use temperature) | Test at actual temperature; check fogging after temperature cycling |
| Hot-fill / pasteurization / retort | Heat-rated adhesive + barrier facestock for wet-heat exposure | Rate adhesive to process peak + margin; watch edge bleed |
| Chemical / solvent exposure | Chemical-resistant adhesive + over-laminated film face | Test with the customer's actual medium, not a stand-in |
| PP / PE low-energy surfaces | Low-surface-energy adhesive, or pre-treated substrate (≥38 dyn/cm target) | Check mould-release contamination on moulded parts |
| Recyclable / returnable bottles | Wash-off or removable adhesive matched to the wash process | Confirm removal behaviour after real wash cycles |
