Low-Surface-Energy Substrates
PP, PE foam and corrugated board repel ordinary adhesives. We build bonds for the surfaces water-based glues cannot wet.
The Challenge
Polypropylene and polyethylene have notoriously low surface energy: ordinary adhesives bead up instead of spreading, so labels peel within days. Foam packaging, molded PP containers and coated corrugated boxes are the classic offenders.
These substrates are everywhere in food logistics, agriculture and e-commerce shipping — which means the failure shows up in the field, not at the supplier.
Why Labels Fail
Wetting is the first requirement of adhesion. A low-energy surface resists wetting, so the adhesive cannot spread into the microscopic texture of the substrate and few contact points are made.
The result is a label that appears bonded at first and lifts from the edge or corner days later, or delaminates under the first temperature change.
Material Solution
We select adhesive systems formulated for low-surface-energy service and pair them with facestocks suited to the packaging — flexible films for foam and curved PP, or stiffer constructions for flat corrugated cases.
Surface preparation is part of the answer: corona/flame treatment, or solvent wipe procedures recommended for your line, can be specified together with the material — discuss with our engineers.
Process Control
Application pressure, dwell time and ambient conditions all matter on low-energy substrates. We coordinate trial application parameters — pressure, speed, temperature — with your line so the validated result transfers to production.
How We Verify
Verification happens on your actual substrate: we apply trial labels to your PP, foam or corrugated samples, age them under your storage conditions and check peel and edge lift over several days.
We document results per sample and keep the validated construction on file for repeat orders.
