Wash-Off Labels for Recyclability

Water-removable adhesives that release cleanly in the wash — helping PET and glass bottles go into recycling ready-to-process.

The Challenge

Recycling begins with a clean bottle. A label whose adhesive leaves residue, or whose facestock fragments during washing, contaminates the wash water and the recycled flake. European packaging regulation (including the PPWR direction) is pushing brands toward designs that recycle cleanly.

The technical ask: a label that bonds firmly through shelf life, transport and use, then releases completely in the washing process.

Why Labels Fail

Conventional pressure-sensitive adhesives are designed to stay bonded forever. They leave adhesive residue or break into fragments during caustic washing, which then re-deposits on the bottle or contaminates the recycling stream.

Facestock choice matters too: some films fragment rather than release as a whole sheet.

Material Solution

Wash-off adhesive systems are formulated to lose their bond under defined wash conditions (hot caustic or hot water, depending on the recycling line). We pair them with facestocks that release cleanly and, where needed, water-compatible ink systems that do not bleed during washing.

The wash window — temperature, time, chemistry — must match the recycling process your bottles will actually enter, so we confirm parameters against your target stream.

Process Control

The wash-off window is narrow: too little adhesion and labels fail in the field, too much and they survive washing. Coating weight and construction are controlled within a documented window, and each batch is produced to the approved specification.

How We Verify

We simulate the wash process on trial labels using the temperature, chemistry and dwell time of your target recycling line, and check for full removal, residue and ink bleed.

We do not claim recyclability certification: compliance assessment is done with your packaging and recycling partners — we provide the material performance data they need.
