Flip-Top & Hinged-Lid Cigarette Packs
The foil window is the opening in a cigarette pack’s inner liner that gives access to the cigarettes. It is a small part of the pack, but it decides how easily the pack opens, how well the tobacco keeps, and how the pack behaves in the hand.
What the liner does
Inner liners are normally aluminum foil or a foil-paper laminate, and act as the barrier that keeps moisture and air away from the tobacco. The window is cut so a cigarette can be taken without disturbing the rest of the pack, and the liner’s dead-fold holds the opened edge in place instead of springing back.
Opening styles
The most common is a pull-tab — a small tab or perforated section that lifts to reveal the cigarettes while leaving the rest of the foil intact. Foil can also be embossed or printed, adding tactile and visual detail that carries through to the opened pack, and metallic finishes such as gold or silver can be applied.
