Counterfeiting is no longer confined to luxury handbags. If your product carries brand value, it is a target — and in cosmetics, electronics, spirits and supplements, fakes now reach the market faster than most brands expect. Counterfeit goods do not just steal revenue. They erode trust, trigger warranty claims, and in regulated categories they create real compliance exposure.
The good news: a well-specified security label makes fakes obvious and makes genuine products traceable. Because “anti-counterfeit” is not a single product, this guide compares the five label technologies we convert most often at our Shenzhen factory — what each one does, where it fits, and how to tell them apart.

1. Why Counterfeit Protection Matters for Your Brand
A working security label earns its cost by doing three jobs at once:
- Deterrence — it makes casual copying visibly harder.
- Verification — it lets a consumer, inspector or distributor confirm authenticity in seconds.
- Traceability — it gives you a trackable layer between factory and shelf.
Skip any one of those and the label becomes decoration. The brands that get real protection are the ones that match the mechanism to their actual risk — not the one that looks most impressive in a sample pack.
2. The 5 Main Anti-Counterfeit Label Technologies
Here is how the most common options stack up. Relative cost is indicative only; the final number depends on size, material, volume and finishing.
| Technology | How it works | Best for | Relative cost | Pros / Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Holographic & Foil-Stamped | Rainbow holographic films and 2D/3D laser diffraction patterns, plus hot- and cold-foil stamping in gold, silver and specialty metallics | Cosmetics, premium packaging, spirits | Mid | High visual impact, verified by eye / can be imitated by skilled printers |
| Tamper-Evident (VOID) | Labels that leave a clear VOID pattern behind when peeled | Electronics, pharma, sealed cartons and caps | Low–Mid | Instant tamper evidence / single-use |
| Scratch-Off (Reveal) | An opaque scratch layer hides a code or text until it is scraped away | Authentication codes, promotions, gift and voucher cards | Low–Mid | Familiar to users, cheap to add / obscured layer can be removed by hand |
| Variable Data & Serialized QR | A unique code, barcode or QR printed per piece or per batch | Track-and-trace, anti-diversion, one-code-one-product | Mid | Every unit is unique and traceable / depends on a code backend and print discipline |
| RFID & NFC Smart Labels | A printed label with an electronic inlay that is read by a phone or reader | Supply chain, luxury, authentication apps | High | Digital verification, bulk reading / higher unit cost, inlay handling matters |
2.1 Holographic & Foil-Stamped Labels

Holographic films and laser diffraction patterns shift as the label moves — fast to verify by eye, and hard to reproduce without the right origination. We run full-spectrum holographic stock, custom 2D/3D laser graphics, and hot- or cold-foil stamping in gold, rose gold and silver, supplied as die-cut rolls, sheets or closures for bottle caps and cartons. Holographics usually work as the visible layer of a security programme: strong shelf presence, backed by something harder to copy underneath. 2.2 Tamper-Evident (VOID) Labels

A VOID label is engineered so that peeling it destroys the message: the sticker lifts away and leaves a clear “VOID” pattern on the surface behind. That makes it a natural fit for seals, warranty protection and tamper checks on caps, cartons and pouches — anywhere you need to know whether a package has already been opened. It is one of the most cost-effective security features available, because the deterrence is mechanical rather than digital. Explore tamper-evident and security options →
2.3 Scratch-Off (Reveal) Labels

A scratch-off layer hides a code or text until the user scrapes it away — the same mechanism behind lottery cards and mobile top-up vouchers, adapted for brand authentication and promotional reveal. The appeal is familiarity: users already understand what to do. Scratch-off works best as the reveal layer on top of a serialized code, so the number underneath is both hidden and unique. 2.4 Variable Data & Serialized QR Codes

Serialization turns every label into a unique record: each piece carries its own code, and every code must be readable, unique and traceable back to your database. This is what makes anti-counterfeit, anti-diversion and recall programmes possible. It is also the technology where process beats materials — the failure modes customers fear most are duplicate codes, unreadable codes, and files that do not reconcile with what actually shipped. We print variable codes inline with your static artwork, with code size, format and contrast selected for your scanner ecosystem, and verify read quality as we run. 2.5 RFID & NFC Smart Labels

RFID and NFC labels combine a printed label with an electronic inlay, and the value is in the marriage: the inlay must sit precisely, survive converting and lamination, and still read reliably through the finished label. Inlay shift during lamination is the classic defect — a few millimetres off spec detunes the antenna — and metallic facestocks can shield a tag entirely. We integrate inlays from certified partners and focus our engineering on what happens around them: lamination alignment, radio-friendly facestock selection, and read verification before the roll ships. Best reserved for higher-value goods and programmes that will actually use the digital data. See RFID / NFC composite labels →
3. How to Choose by Industry
- Cosmetics & personal care — holographic or foil for shelf impact, tied to a serialized code for verification.
- Electronics — VOID tamper-evident seals, plus a serial number on the carton.
- Spirits & wine — holographic plus fine detail or NFC, layered for high-risk, high-margin bottles.
- Pharmaceuticals — serialization and tamper-evident seals, where regulation often drives the format.
- Premium & collectible — NFC or RFID for authentication apps, with foil finishing for the unboxing moment.
Most programmes end up with a combination rather than a single technology: the visible layer deters, and the data layer proves.
4. A Layered Approach Works Best
No single technology is bulletproof. A hologram alone can be defeated by a determined printer; a QR code is only as good as the backend behind it. Pairing a visible feature (hologram, foil, VOID) with a hidden or digital one (serialized code, RFID) raises the cost of counterfeiting far beyond what most fakers will attempt. Think of it as deterrence plus proof — one layer makes copying visibly hard, the other makes authenticity verifiable.
5. Working with a Label Manufacturer — A Buyer's Checklist
Before you request a quote, have these five answers ready so your supplier can match the right process:
- Substrate and application surface — glass, plastic, metal, or curved?
- Required durability — water, heat, solvent or freezer exposure?
- Volume and reorder cadence — MOQ and lead-time expectations.
- Authentication method your customers will use — visual, scan, or app.
- Certifications needed — ISO, food-safe, or market-specific requirements.
At Kayu, security labels are printed, converted and inspected in one factory: ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, with press registration held to ±0.1 mm, colour difference controlled to ΔE ≤ 2.0, and barcode scan grade verified to ≥ 2.5 (ANSI/ISO 15416) on every batch. MOQs are kept low and sampling free, so you can prove the label on your own containers before committing to a run.
6. Get the Right Label the First Time
Anti-counterfeit protection is a system, not a sticker: identify your risk, choose the technology that matches it, then confirm the material against your container and line.
